Tabata whata?

Athletes and celebs have dubbed this the "4-minute miracle." Now 4 minutes might not seem like a lot, but once you're done you will feel completely exhausted beyond all belief. Just 4 minutes can help you burn more fat and help you look 200 percent leaner than a traditional 60-minute aerobic workout. It's true!

4 minutes of Tabata > an entire hour of running

UNBELIEVABLE RIGHT?? If you're interested in trying it out for yourself, here's a little more about the workout via Shape Magazine:

The trick to getting all these benefits is the level of intensity. To do a Tabata, an exercise developed in the '70's for Japanese Olympians, all you have to do is pick a cardio activity such as running, jumping rope, or biking and go as hard as you can for 20 seconds. Follow that with 10 seconds of rest and repeat seven more times. And when I say "as hard as you can go," I mean 100-percent maximal intensity. By the end of the 4 minutes you should feel like you're going to die.

When I first started doing these, I swear I even saw a light at the end of a tunnel. I have to really talk myself into doing the workout, but seeing the very real changes in my body has made me a believer. Adding two Tabatas per week to my workouts helped me shed 7 percent body fat in one month.

A few tips to get you started: First, while you can do a Tabata interval with just about any exercise, start with one in which you're very comfortable. Most people choose sprinting on a treadmill. Second, get a good timer
no matter how good you think you are at 1-mississippi-ing, you cannot estimate when 20 seconds and 10 seconds have passed when your brain is that fuzzy. Third, get a good mantra that you can repeat in time with your footfalls for each 20-second burst. It sounds silly, but it really helps focus you on what you're doing and not on your excruciating pain.

Pound-Melting Pilates Routine

Hey all! I found this video via Women's Health Magazine that combines Pilates, cardio, and strength training... all of my favorites combined into one! I definitely recommend giving this a try, as I will be doing tonight as well. I would love to be able to do something like this in my class, however all participants would have to bring their own resistance bands. It's definitely something to look into though if I can gather enough interest in it. Let me know how you do!!!

Class UPDATE!

Hey all! I know I've been a little MIA but it's been a super crazy last couple weeks with the end of the quarter and finals this week. After tomorrow I will be updating this beast like crazy!!! :) I also wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the wonderful turnout we had at last week's class!! Although I was super sick, it was a nice intro to get everyone's opinions and see what I could do to improve the routine. Which leads me to my next announcement...

I will be adding cardio to our workouts!!!

Oh yes, that's right. I decided not only to make the routines a little longer and more fast-paced, but I also added some fat-burning mini cardio bursts as well. It makes sense though:

Cardio to melt fat + Pilates to tone muscle = one seriously hot bod

My Pilates routines are excellent for toning muscle fiber, but the most effective way to lose weight is by melting the fat that covers muscle by doing cardio. We all have six packs, but many of ours are covered with layers of fat so they're not very visible. Therefore, pairing Pilates and cardio together gives you the best of both worlds and a better workout! :) I'm going to start this new idea at tomorrow's class and will tweak it accordingly, depending on how everyone takes to it. So if you want to get a jump start on getting fit for the new year... COME!!!
*A quick side note about which doors to enter at the Lime Street location. I know I said to enter and exit through the external doors connected to the room. THIS IS INCORRECT and I apologize! There was a miscommunication issue and we have been directed to enter those same glass doors by the flagpole like we did last week.

Anyway, can't wait for some CARDIOLATES haha! See you tomorrow at 7pm! If you have any questions you know how to reach me :)
